An old saying, but one that still holds true in today's world of web design (and much of what's here is of equal relevance in social media postings). Like an artist sitting inches away from a canvas, or an accountant pouring over some detailed statistical information, it's very easy to spend too much time far too close to what you're doing.
This can be either physically or mentally, and certainly applies to a small business' online content. Here are three key questions that show how it's possible for closeness to cause confusion...
Is your content too technical?
This is not just for highly complex areas. It's a simple truth that every business develops its use of jargon - and this can seem like a private language to outsiders. For many operations, their potential clients are much less skilled in this area of expertise. The danger is that content which seems too detailed, or specialised, can simply drive those possible customers to look for a simpler source for what they need.
Is your content too inward-looking?
It's natural for any business, when creating web content, to talk more about the things they are good at; of the pride they have in their products and services. Yet, much of that is of no more than incidental importance to potential customers. They are looking for solutions to problems, to having their needs met. What they find in your web or social media content really needs to be focused on this.
Is your content incomplete?
Another old saying: 'The worst person to ask for directions is someone who knows how to get there'! Seems strange, but their help is often incomplete, because they know so well how to reach that destination that steps strangers need to know can be accidentally missed out. It's the same when providing online information. There's a danger that your intimate knowledge can lead to sub-conscious assumptions that others share part or all of it.
So, for your digital marketing activities, it can often be of real benefit to have outside eyes help add balance to such content. This is just one of the many ways our dedicated team here at LS25 Web Design can help you make the most of an online presence.
